In this book, students embark on a journey of investigation. They will explore five important musical elements which a composer works with to create a piece of music, and the ways in which the composer balances and combines these elements to create their own musical style. Then, working in historical sequence from around 1450 to the present day, they will examine characteristic 'fingerprints' for each period in the Western classical tradition. In doing so students are encouraged to pursue their investigations more broadly by comparing and contrasting one style with another, tracing musical connections and similarities through time or across diverse cultural traditions.
